Former Chelsea full-back Filipe Luis has won his first trophy as a manager just over a month after taking charge of Flamengo.
On Sunday Flamengo beat Atletico Mineiro 1-0 in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil – the nation’s equivalent of the FA Cup – to secure a 4-1 aggregate win.
Luis, 39, was appointed interim manager on 30 September following the sacking of former Brazil coach Tite, but was made permanent the following day.
The former full-back made 333 appearances over two spells with Atletico Madrid either side of spending the 2014-15 season at Chelsea where he helped the Blues win the Premier League and EFL Cup.
He joined Brazilian giants Flamengo in 2019 and retired in December 2023 after winning the Copa Libertadores twice and two Brasileiro Serie A titles.
Luis took charge of the club’s under-17s team in January before moving up to the under-20s, with whom he won the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup in August.
After Sunday’s victory, Luis – who has won six out of eight games in charge – described Flamengo as “the best squad in South America” that can “compete with some teams in Europe”.
Flamengo are fifth in the Brasileiro Serie A table, 10 points behind leaders Botafogo with a game in-hand and six games left to play.
