In a violent attack believed to be linked to cultists, Mutiu Akinbami, a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area, was shot and killed on Friday evening near the Brewery Bus Stop in Abeokuta. Akinbami, commonly known as “Egor,” was reportedly attacked while riding a motorcycle with his son.
According to eyewitness reports, the assailants, who arrived in a white, unregistered Toyota Hilux with tinted windows, appeared to have tracked Akinbami from his residence at Olomoore Federal Housing Estate. “The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. between the Brewery Bus Stop and Olomoore Junction,” said a source who spoke on condition of anonymity. “As soon as they caught up with him, one of the masked men opened fire, fatally wounding him.”
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the killing in a statement on Saturday, noting that officers from the Lafenwa Division responded quickly. “The DPO received a report at about 18:40 hours that Akinbami was shot from behind by a masked assailant while on a motorcycle,” Odutola said. Despite prompt transport to Ijaiye General Hospital, Akinbami was pronounced dead on arrival.
Preliminary investigations by police suggest that Akinbami was affiliated with the Eiye confraternity and previously held a high-ranking position at the Federal College of Education in Abeokuta. Police have made some arrests, and further details are expected as investigations continue.
This killing follows a similar incident last month when suspected cultists allegedly murdered Adeleke Adeyinka, an All Progressives Congress councilorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government, at Jide Jones, Oke Ilewo.
The recent spate of violence has raised concerns among residents and authorities, who are intensifying efforts to clamp down on cult-related activities in the region.
