Josep Maria Bartomeu, the former club president of Barcelona is, according to reports, one of four officials to have been arrested on Monday.

The arrests come in the wake of an investigation into the ‘Barcagate‘ scandal of 2020. Bartomeu stood down as club president in October, with elections to name his successor set to take place next Sunday.

Maria Bartomeu will spend Monday night in police cells after being arrested in the morning, according to reports in Spain.

The news comes after police raided the club’s offices. A regional police spokeswoman confirmed several arrests had been made following an investigation by the force’s financial crimes unit, without confirming the number of arrests made or their identities.
