FOREWORD
As human beings, it is easy for us to believe that we have control over everything.
It is easy to think that way. If we go to the “buka” and ask for three pieces of
Akara, you will get the three. Though it may come as a shock to people that they
have litt
le control over life, is this particularly bad? Maybe. This is an example
from a story that l learnt as a child.
The story goes thus; a man broke his leg while at work and he got upset that he
could no longer get money from working.
After a while, a
soldier came to his house and said he is looking for a man to join
the upcoming war. Unfortunately, the worker has a broken leg so he couldn’t join
the war. Instead, all the worker’s friends were taken into the brutal war where they
died in horrific ways.
The story tells us that the uncertainties that occur can be good or bad. And it takes
patience and virtue from a person to make the situation good or bad.
When I was 16years old, I could never have guessed that I was going to get injured
and harmed indes
cribably. It could have been extremely easy for me to focus on
how events in my life harmed me irreversibly. But I chose to focus on thinking like
this. “If that accident didn’t happen, I would be the same person that I am today”.
Since I recovered from m
y injury, a piece of mind washed over me, I had to have a
strong will to live a life that has meaning to me. Instead of wasting my time on
vii
frivolous activities, I spend my free time teaching myself things that make me
happy. So instead of looking back at m
y injury with anger, I look back at my injury
with gratitude.
Don’t let things that happen out of your control change who you are as a person
because no one else will do it for you.
