President Bola Tinubu has posthumously honored the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, with the prestigious Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR) national honor.

The announcement was made during Lagbaja’s burial ceremony held on Friday in Abuja. This honor recognizes his exceptional dedication and service to the nation throughout his military career.

The president expressed that Lagbaja’s legacy of service would be cherished for generations. “As an eternal symbol of our appreciation, I have granted the late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous National Honour of Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I invite his wife, Maria, to collect the honor,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu hailed Lagbaja as one of his most trusted appointees, describing him as a true soldier who exemplified the best qualities of his profession. “He was more than I could have hoped for. He was one of my best appointments. Lieutenant General Lagbaja embodied the finest ideals of a patriot and soldier. His commitment to the nation was unwavering.”

The president also recognized Lagbaja’s role as a trusted advisor, noting his clear understanding of the military’s duty to safeguard the country’s democracy and people. He praised Lagbaja’s leadership, commitment to the welfare of his troops and their families, and the courage he demonstrated in his service.

“Lieutenant General Lagbaja was a distinguished leader, a true professional who understood his duty. His intellect, his action, and his care for others made him stand out. He cared more for the nation and his soldiers than for himself,” Tinubu said. “Our country has lost a leader of immense value.”

Despite the profound loss, the president emphasized that Lagbaja would not want the nation to be overtaken by grief. “To the gallant officers, do not let death defeat us. Continue the work he left unfinished. Honor him by pressing on with courage,” Tinubu urged.
