Synopsis
Deep in the San Fernando Valley, amidst rows of dilapidated warehouses, was rock n’ roll’s best kept secret: Sound City. America’s greatest unsung recording studio was a bit of a dump, but had three things going for it: a wonderful group of people in charge, miraculous acoustics, and a one-of-a-kind recording console, the Neve. As its legend grew, seminal bands and artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana all came out to put magic to 2″ tape. To get a sense of how important Sound City was to music, you only have to look at the albums that were recorded there. Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush. Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. Nirvana’s Nevermind. Weezer’s Pinkerton. Tom Petty. Johnny Cash. Rage Against the Machine. Rick Springfield. Ratt. REO Speedwagon. Barry Manilow. Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Grateful Dead, Nine Inch Nails… the list just goes on and on. Directed by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana) and featuring interviews and performances from the iconic musicians who recorded some of rock’s greatest albums at the studio, Sound City doesn’t just tell the story of this real life rock n’ roll shrine, it celebrates the human element of music as Grohl gathers some of rock’s biggest artists to collaborate on new music. Using Sound City’s legendary analog console, together these artists create musical miracles in a digital world.
