Two people were killed in Ughelli North, Delta State, following a dispute over revenue collection at Ughelli main market, which is shared by the communities of Iwhreko and Ekiugbo.
One victim, identified as Onome, also known as Oyibo, was reportedly collecting fees from petty traders at the market when he was confronted by unknown individuals. As traders tried to mediate, gunshots were fired.
Initially, bystanders thought the noise was from firecrackers, but traders soon realized it was gunfire and fled in panic. Later, they found Onome’s body near the former Eco Bank building.
A second victim, Nathaniel, was found injured nearby. Passersby helped take him to Ughelli Central Hospital, but he died from his injuries.
Ughelli North Local Government Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, confirmed he alerted security forces, including the Area Commander and the Army, to secure the area and restore order.
He stated that further information would be available after a full investigation.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer SP Edafe Bright also confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is underway.
