US Capitol: ‘Rioting Unacceptable’, ‘Criminals’ Will Be Prosecuted ― US Ambassador To Nigeria

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, has condemned the storming of the US Capitol by pro-Trump protesters who were of the notion that the presidential election was rigged.

The development at the US Capitol drew wide criticism from different regions across the world, especially strong critics of the nation’s democratic system.

In a press statement made available to Vanguard, Leonard, reassured the “enduring friendship and partnership between the United States and the people of Nigeria will endure and thrive” as the two nations will continue to work and their democracy.

Also reiterating the supremacy of democracy in the US, she stated; “the United States Congress has completed its Constitutionally mandated count of the Electoral College vote and affirmed the election of Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Kamala D. Harris.

“They will be sworn into office and a peaceful transfer of power will occur on January 20, 2021. Lawlessness and rioting are always unacceptable.

“The criminals who stormed the U.S. Capitol will be held accountable in accordance with the rule of law in the United States. Our heartfelt gratitude to the many citizens of Nigeria who sent messages of support during Wednesday’s difficult hours.

“The enduring friendship and partnership between the United States and the people of Nigeria will endure and thrive as we work to perfect our union and our democracy.”

However, Vanguard had earlier reported that a police officer injured during the protest is dead.

Four protesters died, including a woman who was shot by police. Three other deaths were reported on the Capitol grounds, but the circumstances remained unclear.
