A vigilante operative was rescued on Sunday night after an attack by gunmen on members of the Anambra State Vigilante Service along the Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area.
On Sunday, one of the vigilante group’s members was injured, and their operational vehicle was set on fire.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Spokesman, confirmed the incident in a press release on Monday.
He explained that the police acted swiftly to counter the attack, leading to the successful rescue of one of the vigilante group members.
Ikenga stated that the injured victim was promptly taken to the hospital, where he is now undergoing treatment.
According to him, police officers cordoned off the location of the incident to prevent the gunmen from exploiting the situation to pillage citizens’ possessions and products.
Ikenga said, “The police-led security forces on Sunday, by 2.30 pm responded swiftly to an attack on members of the Anambra State Vigilantes of Umuchu extraction along the Amesi-Uga Road and rescued one wounded vigilante operative.
“The joint security forces quickly rushed the victim to the hospital where he is currently responding to treatment and activated intelligent-information-led patrols in the area aimed to deny the criminals the space they enjoy to cause havoc and possibly arrest.
“Unfortunately, during the gun duel bullets hit the fuel tank of the Toyota Frontier Van belonging to the AVG. As a result, the van was razed down.”
