You Owe No Apology To Muslim – Soyinka Defends Davido

Prof. Wole Soyinka a literary icon, has urged musician Davido not to apologize for the controversial video he shared on his social media platforms.

According to reports, Davido received harsh criticism after releasing a portion of the music video for his signee, Logos Olori‘s new single “Jaye Lo” on Twitter, which showed people worshipping and dancing in front of a mosque.

The singer eventually bow to the pressure and he deleted the video, but he refused to apologize.

Despite the removal of the video, some Muslims are still calling for Davido to provide a public apology. A group of Muslim youngsters recently rushed to the streets of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to protest Davido, setting fire to a big banner of the artist.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, Soyinka stated that Davido owes no apologies to Muslims. According to the Nobel laureate, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai made offensive remarks about Christians in the past but was never compelled to apologize.

“There was nothing to apologize for,” he remarked, referring to El Rufai’s remarks at the time. It should come as no surprise that I completely disagree with Shehu Sani, if he has, as reported, demanded an apology from Davido on behalf of the Muslim community.

Soyinka went on to say that it wasn’t Davido’s music that led to the lynching of Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student slain by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year for suspected blasphemy.
